Pastels and Watercolors (and a few other art media)

Nice. I can't decide which I like more.

They're both lovely! I like the 2nd one a little more.

I'm tickled that you're enjoying acrylics!

Ok way out of my flower comfort zone on this one. Tried to follow a tutorial by Jane Slivka on YouTube. I like her teaching style. She explains how to start the painting and the logic behind what she’s doing. Most of the acrylic artists post a demo with no instructions. Not a lot of actual tutorials with voice overs that I’ve been able to find on subjects that I’m interested in painting.

It needs a few touch ups once it full dries. Will look at it again tomorrow.

Beautiful job! I should look at more you tube stuff but like you say, I don't want to watch someone just do something without guidance and explanation and so many of them are like that.

This looks great - showing some Impressionist technique here. The water strokes look very Monet-like. A nice skill to have! I like this painting very much.

Thanks! Boats are hard. One little line going the wrong way and it just looks off. I had to redo this one several times before it came out right - really looking at the photo each time.

Thank you. This woman’s YouTube channel is called the freedom of acrylics. I really like her videos. Most of her paintings are in this loose style, which I love. I can’t deal with realism. I like either impressionistic or sort of a fluid type of art.

Same here! I can admire realism in a museum, because it's amazing when done well, but will move on to the impressionists and surrealists and stay a lot longer. :)

Still practicing my boats and water. This WIP is my take on a painting I found online by Tatyana Lysenko. I’m happy with the bottom boat mostly. It just needs highlights when it dries. Top boat is too dark and out of perspective and needs to be reshaped in the front but there’s so much paint on the canvas already it will need to dry for a day before I can try to fix it. I like how the water came out even if it’s a bit busy and I’m happy with the tie downs and reflections. Happy to hear any suggestions or advice.

So cool - so colorful! I don't know if I'd sweat the perspective of the boat too much - note the perspective of the ref image. I like paintings like this: things deliberately a bit off-kilter but the subject is still clear, and the colors are bright and whimsical.

If you're trying to go with the ref photo, maybe a little more space between the boats next time? They're a bit crowded. But I agree with you: your water is very good, and you nailed the reflections. This is a fun painting!

Still enjoying your class? Are you being encouraged to look at online ref photos for practice or just doing these for fun? Either way you're doing really well.

Yes definitely too close together on the boats. I couldn’t wait for it to dry so I used my hairdryer! This is with the highlights and I lightened the water a bit. I keep forgetting that acrylics dry so much darker than watercolors. I did my best to fix the boat. In taking the photo I spotted a few more things to fix but nothing major. I’m going to keep at the boats until I can get the shapes right consistently.

Class is good. Last week we worked on complimentary colors. Had to set up a still life and then paint it using the chosen colors. That was new territory for me. Here’s my effort. It’s still a WIP. Have to finish it by Fridays class. Part of the class is to also work on whatever we want during the week and bring it in for critique/feedback.

Went to the Henry Moore and Georgia O’Keefe exhibit at the MFA today. Her work is so gorgeous! They also have a bunch of Monets, Renoir s Dance at Bougival and several Van Goghs. A wonderful, visually exhausting day.

I’m not sure why but is the specific painting that pops into my mind whenever anyone mentions art. I was thrilled to see it in person.

What a great exhibit this is! Lucky you.

Somehow I thought you'd like O'Keeffe. So glad you had the opportunity to view her work up close like this. 😀

Still obsessing on boats. Learned how to paint fog today. I wanted to paint this photo that one of my friends took so I had to figure it out with the help of YouTube 😊. I included the reference photo - I think it might be a better watercolor.

Are we doing a challenge this month? Whose turn is it to name it?

Nice. I used to do clouds (and some trees) in oil by scrubbing with a well worn bristle brush.
