Photos NOT OK to edit
The uploader does not work so here is a link to the image instead.

I photographed this last year around midnight at the rapids of the drowned, in the South Slave Region of the NWT.

It's one of the only locations in the world you can find american white pelicans nesting in moving water (rapids).

I used a tripod, gelled flash, canon 5D mark II, 70-200 2.8L with 2x kenko converter.

Not sure why the image will not upload..

Light painting is just my name for the photograph.

It has to do with the technique used to photograph it, but does not directly refer light painting=photograph.

:)

The light painting technique utilizes a flashlight to "paint" upon a scene and a long exposure allows the light to appear as if someone is drawing a marker on the photograph. more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_painting

In this case while I did not use this technique this photograph is often mistaken to be a painting because of the hyperrealistic colors and the contrast between the pelican standing very still amongst the long exposure water. I used a gelled flash to help "paint light" back on to the dark image and give clarity back to the scene.

So while not really using the light painting technique, I felt like a painter painting light upon the scene before me, chasing away the dark and the shadows.

enjoy

Added the image, found out how to do it :)
