Exactly. Like I said I am sure I could pass the test. I know an awful lot of theory, but that doesn't make me a "master", certainly not in the kinds of demands that a client will require. Certifying skill without experience is just nice words on paper.

To be a bit fair to the certification process, the test is only 1/2 the process. You still need to submit images under strict guidelines to be certified.

If you send 100 people to photography school. You wont end up having 100 photographers in the end. It takes a special talent and an eye for getting that awsome image. The same goes for finish carpenters. You either have it or you dont. No amount of schooling is going to make you better. I get a kick out of people that buy an slr and all of the sudden their photographers.

In order to pass the exam you will need the education you are getting in school. You don't have to get it in a SCHOOL setting, but you do have to get the education somewhere. And it's not just the basics. The testing is not as simple as f stops and shutter speeds.
Being a CPP or CMP is great, but it does not mean you are anything. It is not a requirement to be a photographer, although I will admit that I'd trust a CPP or CMP before I'd trust a Jane Doe. So if there is a master or certified photographer in your area they may well get the job before you do-and at a higher price.

It's not the end all to beat all, but it is definitely useful and worthwhile to study and take the tests, submit the images and become a CPP or CMP. There are practice tests and groups out there, check them out.
