I dunno, but for me the mountains are out of focus while the sky is perfectly sharp...

they call the phenomenon "thermals" the eagles, and ultralight aircraft can ride the updrafts to crazy heights. a guy flew his ultralight over McKinley riding thermals. they provide a slightly distorted "shimmery" effect around sunrise., as you noted, it affects only the upper edge of the mountains, but not the water or sky.
