Just as a side note. When I first joined this forum (not too long ago) I posted a couple of pictures I was pretty proud of. I considered myself a decent photographer with 40 years of experience. Imagine my surprise when I got quite a bit of criticism and critique that I was not expecting. I decided this wasn't the place for me; but I thought better of it and decided to use the information here to improve my skills. I believe I've grown as a photographer as a result of being involved here. This isn't the place to get pats on the back over your kids pictures, but it's a great place to learn the skills you need to take better pictures; no matter what your present skill level is.

So Rocketman, we can expect to see you at the Christmas party???

i have upset a few but i dont think im guilty this time

Pretty sure I know who it was; someone else who has a knack for it, but if I'm right, it was definitely a huge over-reaction.
In fact, I almost posted in the thread where it happened just to say "Wow, overreact much?" but in the end, decided watching Pawn Stars held more promise. :lmao:

OP: If you're gonna be hanging around, let me give a piece of advice. The ones that make you want to overreact, the ones that rile you, get your defenses up, making you want to call their mothers' names--those are very often the ones you really want to LISTEN to. They have VAST experience and are here, in part, to HELP those who are new to photography and who actually WANT to listen and learn. (Some of them, I'm convinced, are also here as the result of some sort of agreement between TPF and the HFTHS (Home For The Hopelessly Snarky)). :D

On a side note, if more people were like you folks there would be no issue. I appreciate you making me feel welcome regardless of my learning stage!

Without knowing you, let me project a little.
It is pretty difficult for someone who is educated and skilled to publicly 'show his butt', by that I mean be obviously new and inept at a skill.
Teens have this problems because they like to project an image.
Adults have this problem because they've been competent at things for a while and don't like to look and feel, well, incompetent.

Some of the people here who have progressed the fastest and the best have started out a bit cranky.
Just stick with it, start posting pictures, own your newness and be OK with it.
Like riding a bicycle or sex, what seems impossible to get right at first becomes second nature.

Read the threads on how to get critique and follow through.

THere, we love you. :hug:::hug::

Isn't there a $100 cancellation fee?

If there are specific individuals that you find really bother you, you can always put them on ignore. Just click on the users name to go to their profile. Then click "Add to Ignore List"

Hey man, just to compound on what everyone else said...

When I first joined this forum I was pretty appalled, in fact I didn't really stick around for a while. I joined the forum, actually, a couple months BEFORE I got my first DSLR. I read articles on here, learned alot, posted some pictures. The problem was, it wasn't critique, it was crap like "Why would you even take that" or "I opened this thread for that?" type comments. When you're new, and that snob crap is the only impression you have with the forums? Yeah, it can make you think this is a waste of time.

But over time, I found that this is only a small, albeit loud and stinky, minority. Most folks want to see you learn and grow, and are happy to share their knowledge and expertise with you. They will give some critique, though hopefully the can leave the nasty comments out of it. Some won't though, and you just gotta let that one roll off your back!

You can always "deadlock" your account. Type some random string in Notepad, don't look at it. Select it into your paste buffer. Go to the profile section to change your password, copy it in, then close the notepad session without saving it. Change your Email to something that does not exist. Update your profile and then log-out. You will not be able to log-in, and you will not be able to reset your password.

Don't forget to delete any links to your social networks and your website if you have one. Delete any signature as well. In short, clean out your desk before Security escorts you to the sidewalk.

RocketMan..

If it was our little exchange that prompted this.... I apologize. I had no intention of attempting to run you off, I was merely trying to show you something (that may or may not be irrelevant!)

So again, I apologize! Stick around... and you will see that you CAN learn a lot here!

(Sharon... HFTHS? lol! :greenpbl:)

Whoa wait there is a Leica gathering dust in a cabinet? Who? Where? I must rescue it. :-) lol.

As for the op we all have our moments of irritation around here. You need to pick your battles wisely and ignore those that make you see red. Its just as frustrating to those giving advice or c&c to be ignored or scoffed at as it is for some to accept that not everyone agrees with their vision. If we all respect each other there is no problems. Snarky comments are likely lack of caffeine induced hysteria. Lol. Enjoy your stay now go shoot something :-)

Rocketman, I joined a week or so before you. I have stuck around because of the posts that can appear harsh and critical. I have plenty of people telling me my work is great - I come here for the truth. There are a lot of nice, touchy-feely forums out there, and for the most part, they suck. I think that should be the tagline for this forum, "TPF - We Don't Suck Much"
