I think it works very well for me, because it brings here face more upright than the second photo you posted. I don't (feel like I) have to tilt my head when I look at her. Also, her hands on the railing look like she has a good grip on the rail, so it visually, and physically makes sense. Basically, she looks like she's hanging on.
