Portable printer

Hello,

We are traveling by sailboat and for the past 3 months have visited Vanuatu and taken pictures of remote village life and ceremonies. Incredible! We will return again next year for about 4 months.

One of the things we want to be able to do is print pictures for people, who usually have never seen a picture of themselves or their kids. The printer needs to be small (we are on a small boat) and needs to charge using 230 volt (european standard).

It looks like the Epson Picturemate Charm Personal Photo Lab Inkjet Printer (C11CA56203) would be a great choice. 4x6 maximum size is fine.

First, does anyone know if this will work on 230 volt?

Second, what is your opinion of the printer and is there a better choice?

If it doesn't draw too many watts you can get a converter that has adapters for various plugs. My wife and I bought this http://www.amazon.com/Samsonite-Lug...DFKQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320487585&sr=8-1 for our trip to Scotland this year and Ireland next year so we can charge the cell phone, use her hair dryer, etc. and it worked fine. I looked up the specs on the Epson and it only pulls a small amount of wattage. All the bad reviews on converters are from people who use full size hair dryers that exceed the maximum wattage of the converter and then they're surprised when it catches on fire. Just a suggestion.

This company makes some power alternatives if the batteries do not cut it. I use the larger Explorer XT should the battery packs die out when shooting outdoors. Lets me continue the shoot without too much interuption. Good thing to have around the house when power goes out, if charged just plug in a household lamp with a low wattage bulb and it will last a while.

I use an HP PhotoSmart A626 printer. It's quite small only about 10x5x5 inches and prints both 4x6 and 5x7 inches if you have the paper. It has a screen for editing (rotate, lighten/darken, cropping, etc.). I just pull the SD card out of the camera and put it into the slot in the printer then begin to look at them and make prints. I like to paint from my photos and the 4x6 print is just right to look at.

It gets the most use at holidays when I photograph the grandchildren then I let them take turns making their own prints while I supervise. Grandma loves it, especially because she has a set of 5x7 frames which she can replace the photos in with newer ones. Mine came with in kit which included one package of the 4x6 paper. I can buy it separately and also the 5x7 paper.

I just checked on Amazon and they have three models. The A626 is there for about $300 and the A616 is cheaper. I don't know the difference.
I recommend you go to Amazon and just type in the name and model number and it will show what I found.

It has an a/c adapter for the 115V here in the states but you might be able to find a 220 adapter.

Might be just what you are looking for.

I just looked at it on Amazon and it does sound like a great choice..........except I already ordered the Epson Picturemate Charm last week. I will not see it until I return to the USA in a couple of weeks, but I hope it works well. It was $140, so if it doesn't work well over the next year I'll look again at the HP Photosmart.

On the recommendation of David duChemin in his book Within The Frame I also ordered the Polaroid PoGo 2 X 3 printer to carry with me when I'm in remote places. It will be fun to try and for $50 I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun giving pictures to people who often have never seen a picture of themselves.
