Portrait Assignment

I have a portrait assignment that is due and would like to get some feedback on how I did. I had my first photo shoot with a person modeling and I am very nervous how my pictures turned out. Please leave feedback !!!

First and last shots are the same, at an uncomfortable angle and her yawn is contagious.

What strikes me most is how your subject blends into the background. Some fill lighting might have helped brighten your model.

In #2, it appears her face is very soft.. Also, the angle of her arm is very unflattering. As mentioned, first and last shots are the same picture. Good luck.

1 - Why did you make the photo black and white? Having said that the image is flat and bland. You need to find interesting light or add some strobes give the subject more depth. The tilt is annoying and all the lines in the background are distracting. You need to back up and use a long lens like 200-300mm to compress the background. The subjects pose is very unflattering with the yawn and over the shoulder view. The focus is off make sure you are always focusing for the eyes. Another tip, the viewers eyes will always go to the brightest area of the photo first; so becareful of blown out skies and dark subject skin tones.
Simple formula to remember
a) Control the ambient light ( I usually underexpose the ambient light by 1-2 stops)
b) fill light
c) Key light
d) accents lights

I am very new to photography also. But I am getting that lighting is EVERYTHING! Good luck with your assignment. I am currently relocating but hope to take some classes once I get to my new home!

I did notice the peace sign spray painted on the ground at her feet, nice effort. Keep your chin up and keep going, don't get discouraged. Get back out there and take more pictures following the advice you've gotten.

Thank you all for providing me feedback. These were the only images I took with my digital camera. I did notice the unflattering pose and the lighting problems that I will work at in the near future ... but in my defense it was both our first "shoot." I made the picture black and white because my class is B/W Film class... Thank you allfor your feedback
