Tori is a new studio assistant that stood in for some tests before a shoot last week. I liked this portrait of her that came from it.

I like how it feels "old" in a sense. Cute assistant!

Yeah, it does have an "old-timey" feeling to it...maybe due to the simple lighting/presentation, and also the classic clothing and no-makup look she has. These days, women have so much makeup most of the time that seeing a real person is almost a shock. The subdued color palette this has been processed with also probably contributes a bit to the old-time type of vibe. Nice shootin!

Nice picture. My first reaction to the thumbnail was that I didn't see depth but when I clicked on it to blow it up, that was proven totally wrong. I like this simple look.

This is quite close to a very modern fashion look, with contrast to the midtones and some desaturation and a very cold color temperature. For some reason I always think of this as looking "metallic".

I don't like the style, I find it de-humanizing in a way that, again, I cannot put my finger on. However, this is en excellent example of the form! Well done!

Thanks Derrel, you're right about the processing and the way I tried to light the subject, it was for a historical fiction book she was testing for.

That's an good observation. I don't shoot fashion for work but I love shooting simple portraiture and more and more I find myself on a path for the 'simple soul' of the subject, with as little distraction as possible. Martin Schoeller is a great inspiration in this regard. In regards to color, I'm really drawn to little saturation while just enough to provide accurate/pleasing skin tones. My earlier photography is pretty vibrant, so you're probably seeing part of an evolution I'm going through in my work. I think desaturating portraits brings out more character. I can't verbalize why, but that is my feeling.
