I was sitting outside this afternoon watching the kids play and took this picture of my son. Please let me know how I could improve the photo.

The big issue is the background. It's busy and distracting, and the blown highlights behind the child's head really pull the eye away from the subject. Your use of (I presume) the camera's pop-up flash has definitely prevented drastic under-exposure, but it has resulted in somewhat flat lighting and catchlights centred in the pupil, but that's better than the alternative.

On camera flash has flat and muted detail in the face.
The frame is tight.
The background is a tad cluttered with a vehicle.

DOF is nice.

It's the lighting that's killing you.
It's boring.
You can also try placing your subjects near a reflective object to bounce some light.

When you are just sitting outside taking photos of the kids playing you can't really help the background. How do you fix that?

Jenretti, that is a good question. I would like to know that answer as well. I realize that I could have moved a little bit to make better use of the sun light.

Imagine the view through the cameras is the view you see on your TV...keep using the REMOTE, to make CHANGES, until something you want to watch comes into view in front of your eyes...
