Possible silly question

If my friend is shooting with a Nikon and I have a canon can I take her CF card and put it in my canon and download the images onto my computer? Or how do you go about getting the images on one computer?

Possibly. If she's shooting JPEGs, you'll be OK. If she is shooting raw (.NEF) then you'll need software that can display it, like Nikon's NXView, Photoshop, or Lightroom. For Mac, iPhoto will read the raw files, as well - I can't say what Windows has. The Nikon software, if you need it, is free and available from the Nlkon website.

I haven't actually tried it, but putting the card into two different cameras should work. (It works with 2 different Cannon models and just creates different folders for each camera)

Ok I have photoshop so should be no biggie there I am just scared to put the card in a canon camera and loose data or ruin them or something :S

I don't know if a Canon camera can read the card from a Nikon, like a computer can; not sure if the directory structure is standardized. You might have to hook her camera up to your computer or use an external reader. Let us know how it works.

I think you're pretty safe as long as you don't use any in-camera formatting on the cards. ^^
Cameras usually make their own folder in which they store their images so the only thing that'll happen is the Canon camera creating some extra folders next to the ones the Nikon made.
I doubt you'll be able to view the images on the camera (maybe if they are jpg, not sure) but they won't just disappear.

And yes, the directory structures are standardized.

Lots of computers have a CF card slot now, anyways. My iMac and my HP laptop both accept CF cards directly.

It works and the files will be stored in two different folders depending on the camera.

Perhaps you are referring to an SD card slot. Honestly, I haven't seen one. During the early days, I used a PC Card adapter so I can transfer my photos using my CF card directly to the computer. Nowadays, a multi-card reader can be purchased at around $6 and is quite useful obviously. In case I am wrong about laptops having a CF slot, please do inform me. Cheers.

PS I have seen and used desktops with a multi-card slot but haven't seen a laptop that can read CF cards. I am intrigued.
