Practising Portraits #2

I don't know if this qualifies as a portrait class.
This is how it was done. A lovely evening in London n was with a friend.
Took 5 shots.
. Picture was spot meteted
. Made sure the histogram stayed in the centre ..most of it.
. Changed composition to get the sun set in the BG to match with the beer glass.
.

Observations : while clicking this I was not getting a good histogram, so had to increase the iso. Personally I feel the image is slightly over exposed.

I think the car on the right was not necessary.

Please comment and help me get better.

You've clearly put some thought into this, and as it's a picture of a person, in the literal sense, it is a portrait, but unfortunately, the busy, cluttered, and unappealing background really detract from this image, and if you hadn't mentioned what you'd done, I would have thought "cell phone snapshot".

As to the exposure: I think the exposure could be made darker in software, and more of a "drinking beer near sunset outdoors" effect could be gained, and it would strengthen the photo. Since the man's face is not a key or critical component, and you were going for a beer/sun play, I think it mighty work well to make the sun area darker, and more-ornagey, and let the color of the scene run into the very "warm", soft, orangey/yellowish color spectrum, and just make it darker, overall.

The distracting background elements are the main thing I don't like about the image. Obviously the car on the right and the canopy on the left both draw your attention from the main subject. I also don't know that I like the composition of the image, and feel that shooting it vertical might have been a better option.

Yes while I thought of everything else. I forgot to look the 4 corners to make sure the frame was clean. Will work on it next time
