Hey everyone... I was out taking shots and came across these rocks along a lake and went for it...

Image 1
I took this shot because of the way the rocks shape stuck from the plane of the other rocks. Made me feel that this particular rock was special

My aim here was to form an arrow to the lake...

I think you have a decent subject matter. However, you have a couple of things going against you here. First, this looks as if it were shot at High N00n. This is terrible terrible terrible light for shooting just about anything and even worse for shooting something like this. Secondly, the compositions are all centered. They are all shot from the same standing up looking down a row of rocks at the lake shots. I am not sure if you live near here or if you were on vacation or what. If it is someplace you can get back to easily then I suggest this.

Go back early in the morning. Catch the sunrise and try to figure out a way to make the rocks have some meaning with the sunrise. After that use the morning golden hours to capture some of the texture, shadows and highlights, details of the rocks. Get down on the ground and shoot level with the rocks. Get a shot from directly above them. Move around them and check every angle from high to low. Go back in the evening, just about an hour before the sun sets, and do the same thing. Make sure you set your WB on anything but auto and keep it the same for the morning shots and the evening shots, I suggest cloudy. Compare the morning shots to the evening shots with the same shots from the morning and to the ones you shot at high n00n. I am sure you will be able to see quite a difference these golden hour lights can make.

Now on to some direct C&C per request.

The first one, you mention that "I took this shot because of the way the rocks shape stuck from the plane of the other rocks. Made me feel that this particular rock was special." However, you were completely unable to bring that out in the photo. All we see is a rock. The other rocks are just barely visible there is no reference that this is a special rock. A shot from the side showing how it stood out from the rest might have been better to convey that meaning..

For two and three I definitely like the crop better. Neither of these scream "arrow to the lake" but the second does a much better job of whispering it.

The shots over all are not bad, just lacking a little in some areas.

Thanks so much for the advice johnh2005!

It was about noon when I took those shots, but I will definitely try to shoot in the early morning and evening times the next time I am out there...

Thanks alot!

The first shot i really like but i also agree with johnh2005 go back in the morning or evening when there are clouds and really capture and play with the light it will take the shot from looking good to breath taking

I am be no means a great photographer but in the first shot my eyes keep drawing up to the green of the trees at the top it creates an odd line. I think the blue of the water creates a nice backdrop if you focus the shot a little lower

Thanks butterflygirl921, I definitely plan to do so the next time I go out to shoot.

Thanks Matt24138, I see what your talking about...
Now that you mentioned it, Its starting to draw my eye also (isn't that how it always happens...lol)

Perhaps it could serve if I crop the trees out.

I agree go back with better light. I like your idea with #3 using the rocks as a leading line and playing off symmetry. might try some more variations of that.
