Russell (Rainblo) in Window Lighting

Russell is one of my best friends, and also works at the hair salon that often hires me to photograph models with their hair all done up. Recently I went to his apartment to have some wine, and I happened to conveniently have my camera with me (I brought it hoping I could convince him to let me photograph him, which wasn't hard to do at all considering I've made him my muse many times). Daylight was dimming and all we had to use was a single window, but we made the most of what was available. He lives in a small downtown apartment and I only had a borrowed 50mm lens, so we were a bit limited in space as well.

Lately I've been feeling inspired to take my camera along with me when I spend time with my closest friends, and it's been really nice because now I'm starting to build this personal collection of beautiful photographs of my best friends. The next step is to get them printed and start making albums.

First one is good, the second one is fantastic. The color, tone, pose, lighting - you hit it out of the park. The third one, sorry, just don't care for it.

I guess mainly the deep shadows, with lack of detail.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess it's just a matter of vision; I believe too much detail would sterilize the emotion of the shot.

Not quite sure the direction you're going in "sterilize the emotion", but your first shot has a just enough detail in the shadows to create interest, there's a nice transition, rather than the abruptness of the last shot.

Too much detail takes away the feeling and emotion of an image to me. I enjoy dark shadows that leave something to the imagination. Thanks for the feedback.

That 2nd shot is beautiful. Very flattering and great tones. The pose in #3 is throwing me off. I like the half light on the face but with him looking down there's not enough eye visible.

I agree, I wish I captured the eye looking more into the camera. I like the posing though; it's not typical to how most people would choose to photograph men, but to me it definitely show's Russel's more emotive and feminine side. I also enjoy the form it creates for the overall composition of the shot.

Wonderful set, I like them all. #3 is a very creative shot, has a charcoal drawing feel to it. It is very dramatic in the sense he is almost daring you to enter his personal space.

This is one of the biggest reasons I like the 3rd shot the most. I think the posing plus the balance between detail and shadow creates the strongest story and mood of the set.
