If you can see the focus points in your viewfinder, you can use those to line things up and get the horizon fairly level. For example, my D40 shows three [ ] points; I use the left and right ones to line up the horizon. You can also use the top or bottom of the viewfinder itself, then shift slightly to frame the shot.
