I get more the impression he/she WAS sad, but hears a key in the door, a car pulling in the drive, or a can of food being opened.

Cute dog! I would like to see the blacks of the dog's fur dodged a bit, and the paws and whites of the blanket on the couch hit with a bit of highlight recovery. It seems awfully high contrast for such a peaceful image.

She seems sad, but in truth she was about to fall asleep until I said "Ehy, who's there?" and she opened the eyes.

This was a test for my new strobist gear. It is a jpg straight out of the camera, I didn't process it. Soooo...reading the camera settings...uhm...Red Filter On (contrast higher), Sharpness HIGH (and that's ok), Highlights HIGH (that's why a little bit burned) and Shadows HIGH (a little bit burned). You are right. If this were a well thought portrait I would have set the camera better.
The camera was still on my "street photography" setting.
I think these settings are better for this kind of photo (I know, the ear is cut, but as I said this serie was a test):
