Except the pretty model, yourself. It's quite flat in lighting terms and isn't highlighting your eyes.

I think you need more creativity to do a self portrait. Google some and be inspired.!

I agree with the lighting & cropping ... Although, I thought I would try it, I think being behind the camera is much more fun !! Well ... at least until I invest in a remote cuz waiting for the cam timer sure does make holding any expression a challenge. :raisedbrow:

When you can take pictures of yourself with nice lighting, posing and composition it will make it that much easier to do it for others.

Even though the pop up flash can be used as a Fill light at times, it makes for a HORRENDOUS Main light. If that is the extent of your lighting (pop up), find a nice window to use as your Main and then use the pop up at a low setting to fill in the shadows. IMO, you do want some lighting ratio between the lighted side and the shadowed side (3:1 or 4:1 is a good rule of thumb). This helps to create the modeling which influences a more three dimensional look.

I now have two cable remotes. I bought the Nikon brand for about $15, then saw an off-brand for $3.75. Both work fine. I also have the infrared remote (about $15), which also works fine, but it has to be in front of the camera.
A tightly-framed closeup such as yours above would allow the infrared remote to be out of the frame.
