Self Portraits C&C please

So I attempted some self portraits for the first time.

I had white paper up from something I was doing earlier and decided I should try some white seamless self portraits.

Lighting for this is pretty simple. I had one shoot thru umbrella high and camera right. The second light is on the stupid little plastic stand that comes with the speedlight sitting on the ground and pointing up and back at the background.

The hardest part of this whole thing was getting focus right. They are not as sharp as they could be but I think they are acceptable. I used a light stand as as stand in (get it?) for me and focused on that. Then I tried to sit as close as possible to where I had the light stand positioned.

I shot these at f8 and 1/40th of a second at ISO 100.

Ideally, if your dof is good, and you mark your spot, you'll be fine.

One other thing you can do, if your camera is capable...tether it to your laptop and have it with you or near you, and you can set focus via live view on yourself through the eos utility (canon) . I did that for a bit, but now I don't have problems anymore, so I dont need the laptop. I always shoot myself first when setting up for a studio shoot, so it's kinda routine anymore.

your shots are overexposed more than oof, to me anyway.

oh, I should have asked, were you using a remote or timer? 'cause obviously that would make a difference, lol. I recall, before I had a remote, that it was harder to set focus on where I would be. Obviously with the remote, as long as my face is in the area, it locks focus on me no matter how far back or forward I am.

The goal was kinda to overexpose them.

lol, yeah didn't think about it until after my initial reply. A remote will make your life much easier in that regard. lol.

to me, and it might just be me, but overexposing them gives that "haze" and can muddy up focus. Personally, I hate haze in my shots. but it might just be a "me" thing.

Yeah I hear you about the haze. It is a fine line to walk.

They look good to me. The second one made me laugh remote timer is a must with self portraits...I know from experience! Then you have to find a place to hide the little remote...creativity is required!
