I don;'t mind the background being as bright as it is, it's white. What I have a problem with is that your main light on the subject (yea, I know it's you but you are the subject) overall is underexposed. You have very contrasty shadows and no wrap around from the light. Move the umbrella with light closer to you, this will help the exposure and give you wrap around lighting to fill some of the shadowed underlit areas. Try to get it just out of the cameras view, then work from there.

It was really really close. Like touching the side of the lens close. I used a shoot thru umbrella which is the softest modifier I have. I wish I'd of thought to hold a reflector below me for fill.
