I'm not super happy with this one, but thought I would throw it out for critique anyways.

It was pretty noisy so I tried sending it through noise ware though I'm not sure it did much. Anyways, I'm mainly focusing on improving my lighting skills so I would appreciate some C&c on that and anything else you have to offer!

My lighting setup was the overhead room light and one softbox camera right.

When you said softbox.. softbox with what? Strobe or continuous light?

Very nice, considering it is only available light plus one softbox, I like it.

Great lighting and I love using softboxes!
It creates a great effect!

I also think you did pretty good with your available lighting. I am still learning a lot like many of us but I would say that the lighting is a little off at your right eye. Either more shadow there or more light. I am not sure. Hopefully others can articulate this point better than I can.

Anyway, I want to commend you on posting a self portrait for critique. That takes guts and shows your willingness to learn.

Do you have a reflector yet? That would help fill in the other side of your face. I like the dramatic lighting of this though.

None of its in yet, hopefully tomorrow if the snow storm we got didn't delay them. I was going to use a second soft box for fill but I can't find the power cords to my other two soft-boxes anywhere. :headscratch: by the time I realized that they were misplaced I had already curled my hair so I had to give it a shot anyways.

thank you!

Good eye! I did dodge the eye slightly since it was in a weird shade. Not black, but not enough detail to see. I chose to bring it back in, perhaps I'll undo it since it's noticeable. thank you for your thoughts!

Quite nice, very attractive, especially for a self portrait.
You are leaning on your arm, thus raising your left shoulder
Why not crop it this way? you aren't losing anything of importance to the picture amd it puts your lovely face in a prominent position.

I love this suggestion! Thank you!

come on Lew, we want to see more of her not less ;)

Nice selfie and I do like Lew's crop.

I like Lew's crop too. It's a very pretty self-portrait. I think you did quite well. It would make for a nice avi! ;)

It's "okay"...to be honest, I am not and never have been a fan of split lighting, where one half of the face in in light, the other half is in shade. WHy? Split lighting usually creates asymmetry...one side of the face looks bright, the other dark. One eye has big catchlights, the other has a pinpoint catchlight. Symmetry of the face is one of the subliminal things that makes people look attractive. The more-symmetrical a face, the more attractive a person is. This is basically split lighting, and, well...it's something that I do not like. It creates one dimpled side, one without, and one wide side of the face, and one narrow side of the face. I just never have liked split lighting, especially on female faces.
