There's a whole lot of sex going on in the orchard this week. :aiwebs_016: Anyone care to guess what this is??? Better yet, know which is which?

Since no one commented this most be a southern thing. The shot is a close up of a Pecan tree in full bloom. Pecan trees are self pollinating, containing both male and female flowers. The long droopy chain like, Catlins are the pollen producing male flower. If you look closely up in the leaves at the termination of a stem are spiked star like Pistillates, the female flower. Pollen is transmitted by the wind. While a single tree will produce nuts, the yield is better if there are multiple trees/varieties for cross pollination.

I wanted to, but wasn't sure what to say really.

You're showing us tree porn? What is the world coming to? :05.18-flustered:

Nice shot/nice idea. Glad there was no soundtrack! I wouln't want to know.

Well there was a slight breeze rustling the leaves does that count?

Edit to something I said earlier about being self pollinating. Pecan trees have both male/female, but the trees are dichogamous, meaning that the release of pollen by male flowers does not necessarily coincide with the ability of female flowers to receive it. Different cultivars of pecan trees with male and female flowers that perform their functions simultaneously are ordinarily necessary to ensure that pollination takes place.
