Sigh...lighting is my worst enemy today. Help?

Tins... if you would use flash for shots like this, you can equalize the background / subject exposures much more easily.....

Good point. I did think of using the flash, but they'd already packed all my stuff in the van...this was an "on the fly, would you please do this" photo...sadly nothing I had time to set up. Thanks for the advice...I will try to be more conscientious in situations like this

Yes, they are. They did not know the oldest (the girl) was Autistic until the mom was pregnant with their third. And the twins were a surprise pregnancy-on-birth control. They're great kids, a handful, but great kids. I love them so much.

How about simply saying that you're not quite happy with the way these turned out, and you would like to re-shoot at a time when everyone's better rested and happier (and AFTER McDonald's) - with time to actually set up and prepare? This isn't a difficult situation, but I can totally understand where, in the heat of the moment things went south.

I am not sure that they are right off photos. This is a small edit in lightroom reducing exposure and giving a bit of contrast and saturation. I am fairly sure that someone who is good at editing (not me) could fix these photos up nice.

Maybe next time they'll be more aware of the problems and the need to listen to the photographer and you'll be more assertive (I've made the same mistakes) ... and maybe also you'll get them before the kids are tired and cranky. Lessons learned are always valuable.

Kudos for doing as well as you did, last Autumn I spent 2 weeks with my daughter who has 2 sets of twins and in all that time I couldn't get them to stand still long enough for a decent family shot (maybe next time I go in a year or two they'll be older and a little less hyper).

On a separate note: the parents (and you) must be awesome people to survive with 5 autistic kids. I know a little bit about the subject as I've worked with a specialist child psychologist on her websites (Home).

Thanks all...yes...I told them yesterday evening that I wanted to reshoot them They are ok with that, but the dad joked that every time they had a family photo done, his wife was either pregnant, or just had had a baby, so he was scared So maybe I'm lucky that they let me photograph them at all! It was a fun day. They have some pretty cute kids. The older 3 don't like their photo being taken, but the twins still don't mind and the one is just so precious and has the most amazing eyes.
