So I Learned

This is not much of a question, but a telling of my experience. This forum has inspired me to learn more and become better.
So I was watching TV with my wife and I see these spheres I recognize as a light source out of focus. What gets me is a pattern over these spheres. I begin to wonder, is it the light source itself, the lens or a filter. I see it frequently enough to think it is something with the camera equipment used but I wanted to see if I could replicate it.
So turned on the Christmas tree I still have up (family, and sickness are good procrastination excuses). I grabbed the screen from my window and this was the result:

Shot one is a control test, no screen.

Shot two is about as close as it gets to what I remember seeing on TV. I think if I play around more I could get more and better results.
