I can't speak for the 50mm f1.4 vs f1.8.

At f2.8, the "defocused" background Christmas lights for my 35-70mm are more circular shapes. At f5.6, the "defocused" background Christmas lights are hexagonal shapes. I guess the background becoming more in focus, the aperture blades are more defined.

The sigma 50mm 1.4 is also a solid performer in terms of Bokeh..
