I know I know..........politics!!! I m not looking to start a fight w/ anyone or get everyone crazy. I just keep seeing we have SOOO many people from different countries on here and was wondering what they think? I thought it would be nice to hear it right from someone that has first hand knowledge w/ socialized medicine. Any comments would be great!!

Thanks!!

You mean like medicare and medicaid?

Yes, government funded programs.

well, considering most medical associations from other countries that do have socialized health care have put out public messages almost begging the US government to not socialize our health care i'd have to venture a guess and say that it's not so great.

especially the version they want to institute here. at least more and more people are realizing that what the US has now is pretty damn good.

Then why ask someone from different countries? Just ask a neighbor or friend :)

Everyone has an agenda!! I watch news out the wazzooo, I read all kinds of stuff on the internet. And not one of them in my mind doesnt have an agenda.......so it would be nice to hear it from someone that has nothing to gain or lose by saying they like or dislike the system they have in place in their country.

:hug::

Hard to not get political talking about this so your thread is probably not going to stay open long.

But I 'll give you an example: My wife get very nasty migraines that sometimes require trips to the emergency room. She got one of those the last time we were in France. Went to see a doctor and was in the hospital an hour later for her usual treatment. Since we are not insured there we paid full price. Despite the fact that we have a very good insurance here, it cost us less in France than our usual out of pocket cost here. :)

If you're interested to see how it works in other countries (including Switzerland who made the switch to a government ran system not that long ago) I suggest the PBS documentary: Frontline: Sick around the World. Michael Moore's Sicko is kind of a joke.

And to those who have a problem with the idea of government ran insurance, I ask: when do we get rid of government ran schools? As the owner of several houses, I'd be more than happy to stop paying property taxes when I don't even have kids in school anymore.

Is there a rule about no politics on here? Didnt read that one I see. If everyone could keep there cool and not get fired up maybe it will stay open.......:

just like anything, you're going to have extremes on both sides. there are more than enough examples from around the world though that show what does and does not work.

like the actress that died from i believe it was a ski accident in Canada. everyone involved, doctors, lawyers, hospital officials, police, and even several government reps who were reportedly pro social health care all went on record to say she probably would have been alive today if the accident happened in the US.

just research case studies like that. that's what i generally do when policy change is coming about. research as many case studies as you can and make a decision based on the facts about what works best for you and what doesn't.

...Isn't everything he's made kind of a joke?

This is something I think we should get away from. The public shcool system was bad when I went through it, and it's only worse now.
I would like to send my kids to a private school, but I'm not sure if i'll be able to afford that... I considered homeschooling, but I'm not convinced that it's really an option.

Anybody can say anything. Can you back this up with serious links?

Because I once worked with Medecins sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders) I have quite a few doctor friends in France and they all find our system unbelievable. Partly why there was no American chapter of the group for the longest time. The french founders did not want us involved.

So, basically - it's OK untill the fighting starts, then the thread will get locked.

If we can all stay civilized, and talk about this without getting all crazy, I think we'll be OK.

Part of me wants to see socialized health care in the US, part of me wonders who will pay for it...

I have nothing to loose or gain from adding my two chips so to say. Well I live in Canada, and I've experienced a waiting list. I have never been turned down. Of course I don't have to pay for hospital or doctors or specialists. So they better not privatize health care here.

The health plan for the americans, is enraging the insurance companies because they make their profit from denying their clients service when they need it. The amusing thing is, your gov't spent over a trillion dollars for the military before they spent close to a trillion for the economy
