Thanks for the replies. I lowered the highlights just a bit. The right side of his face was really bright in the RAW files as well.

I did notice the pen and glasses and considered photoshopping them out. That pen, however, is the only pen he has bought/used in the 21 years that I've been around him. It's one of his trademarks, so to speak lol.

So I agree that the portrait would probably be better on a technical level without it, but at the same time....

At the same time it would only be attempting to impose "perfection" upon the real world. Perfection often being a dry standard - its the variety and difference in life that often provides interest and insight. If they were just any random pens then yes their loss might well improve the shot for viewing - however that they have a story and connection (even if its only light) to the person presented then they should stay. Might be a thing only those close to him know of; but its there and part of it.

It's rather like people who suggest that people clone moles or freckles out of peoples portraits - sure we can, but then we've no longer got a photo of that person.

That puts an entirely different spin on it. In that case, leaving it in was the right call!

I think part of the reason I missed it when I was taking the photos was because I'm so used to seeing him with his pen and glasses, so, to me, it didn't seem like distractions. It's just a part of who he is. lol.

But yeah, if it were anyone else, I hope I would have been aware enough to ask them to remove the pen/glasses.
