The cropping in the original post definitely works for this because the tree on the right distracts the eye from the stairs. This might be a nice area to return during sunrise or sunset (assuming it's decently lit during those times).

I really enjoyed the shot.
I did a bit of tweaking on your first version, hope you dont mind

I opened it in PS Elements 6 and then used the Nik Viveza Plug In to put control points on a few places, all the dark locations, and then adjust them. Then I reduced the noise in Topaz, and finally pulled some of the green out of it. I also removed whatever was on the stair.

I definatly like your version better and that actually captures more of what I was trying to do.

I still need to hone my photoshop skills (as well as my photo skills lol).
