Studio Backdrop Support System

So I just got 2 paper roll backgronds for Christmas - now I'm looking for a way to use it. I found this on B&H:

Now, it would be cheaper for me to buy two of these:


Impact Air-cushioned Light Stand (Black, 8') LS-8A B&H Photo


...and use a curtan rod as the cross bar. I have one lying around the house. I'm pretty machine shop savvy, so I could make the mounts eaisy enough - plus, I can use it as a light stand if I want, multi purpose. Am I missing something there, is there any inadvisable about this?

The curtain rod may not be as stout.. but if it will handle the weight, go for it. Just make sure it is solidly mounted to the stands... a roll of paper can be heavy, and you wouldn't want it landing on your subject!
