Studio Flash Test Shot - My Daughter

Received my AlienBees B1600 on Friday. My daughter happily agreed to be my subject as I played and experimented with various lighting setups, etc. I was going for a Film Noir look here, intending to end up with a B&W image. But I liked the colors and ended up keeping them. I really have no idea what I am doing - just using trial and error and seeing what I end up with. C&C welcomed!

Yes. If not another light, a reflector at least.

I would also consider moving the Main light up a notch or two vertically.

Agree; I would go for a light high and about 45 degrees camera left, just strong enough so we can see some detail in her hair. Good start!

Depends on what mood you want to invoke! This is sort of dark and mysterious... sneaky even. If she was better lit, it would say something different!

I like it too, it feels like a suspense movie, the shadows of the blind look good and the red lipstick would need just a little bit more light to be perfect. It gives a nice touch to the picture.

Exactly. I do have one that is brighter and it has a completely different feel. It has too much context and no mystery.

I agree. I kept going out on the deck and tweaking the light, then I would run back in the house, frame her up and shoot. By this time I think she was getting tired and wanted to do something else so it is what it is. I may have to order one of those mannequins!

It depends, but I personally like it the way it is. It's dark, and her lips and nails provide a pleasing contrast. If you want to throw a light for her back and shoulders, It would look different.
