Being that this is my son I can't see how this could be a bad photo. However when it comes to "rules" of photography I would appreciate some feedback.

Being that this is my son I can't see how this could be a bad photo.

Cute kid, probably looks like his mother.

Without the binkie, we'd see more of his face.
Shooting from the top of his head emphasizes his forehead (note that it fills half the frame)
Huge ugly vignette makes it seem the room is on fire.
The sclera are really blue so that probably means the white balance is off
It looks like a single flash in his eyes.

He looks like a calm, sweet kid, take lots of pictures until you with a camera is part of the scenery and he doesn't respond.
Save images with exif (exposure data) embedded.
If you mention what software you use, we can hep with that.

Yeah, I haven't quite figured out the best way to post. This one was actually transferred from my phone. If you could give me tips on how to post from my Mac, I would appreciate it. I use PS Elements 10 now but will probably go to Lightroom. And if you think you can take the binkie from please have at it, I'm with you all the way. i did sneak one photo where he dropped it but you can see the confusion in his face.

Apart from being a little soft, I like it just the way it is. As much as I always try and make sure my pictures are perfect, I have some like this of my kids when they were this age, they aren't "photographically" prefect, but I really don't care, they made me happy when I shot them, and they make me smile when I see them 27 years later.

This is the ultimate point of photographs.

I totally agree that personal enjoyment is a very important issue but, however enjoyable, this picture could be better and shouldn't be the example by which all future shots are made.

I completely 100% agree with both of you. I have yet to take a bad shot of either of my children. however at some point I would like to charge for my photography, and I'm pretty sure they ain't paying. I gladly accept all C&C with the expectation of critical critiques, and hope someday with the help of the forum I can call myself a true professional. Again Your feedback is much appreciated.

Start looking at the other shots of children and compare the various issues of composition, white balance and color to yours.
That will give you good (and bad) examples.
