at least for Great Horned Owls. The 'ears' are blurred because of the wind. Had to climb up on the Truck cab to get high enough fro this shot. Old men should not do those kinds of things! Rheumatiz lets you know you're being stupid. ;)

Judging by that glare you should be very, very glad that you're not a mouse!

Oh, she was NOT pleased by me staring at her, pointing things and making clicking sounds! Got my my shot and got out of there quickly before she spooked off the nest. Touchiest owl I have run across so far. Most just don't seem to care so long as you don;t get so near you can possibly physically harm them or something.

Nice shot is that a active nest it is on do you know if there are young near by if you live near there i would suggest checking that spot every so often because who knows what might be in there one of these days

This was taken 3 years ago almost to the day. She hatched 2 and raised one, the one came up missing within a couple weeks of hatching. This was probably the hens first brood. The next year at a different site an older hen hatched two,and one fell out of the nest at about 5-6 weeks of age and survived the fall. Had a few feathers but couldn't fly but managed to climb up some lower limps i a scrub tree and the mother kept it fed, mostly on coots. It is believed it made it long enough to fly away. There only real threat is coyotes and bobcats...and an occasional hawk that will raid a nest when the parents are away.
