What's new

The Coffee House

Good morning, though it still looks like night.
MLW pulled a double (24 hours) at the Watch Office, then 8 (closer to 9) today at the regular office. I dropped her off so she wouldn't have to drive today. Leaving in 30 minutes to pick her up.

Back home from lake rest, starting back on house today. Bedroom painting done, have the carpet samples and the sales rep coming out tomorrow to measure. Hopefully will be able to put everything back in the room soon.

Turned $2 into $60, hopefully the other 4 find the same value. Being put away for the new camera👍.

What's your use case?
That's the hard part. I don't do much these days requiring a high end PC. I don't edit photos or video but I still need a computer for general purpose and other tasks. But I value build quality, beautiful display, accurate color reproduction and high resolution and smoothness, so high refresh rate would be nice! I blame my phone having a 120hz display lol. Its pleasant.

Of course if I was to replace my desktop with a laptop then I'd want to be able to still be able to edit video or something if the need for it arraises.

I got an Asus ROG STRIX Predator Helios 300 15" laptop the year before last, 144 Hz display, Intel 11th gen Core i7 CPU, Nvidia 3060 graphics, 16MB RAM, and that is what I use as an all-around laptop for travel. Not too expensive but not too skimpy on features. I always do comparisons of different models, either gathering the specs myself, of looking at Tom's Hardware of some similar website.

My local best buy has a Lenovo Slim Pro 9 with an i9, 32gb ddr5, 4060 8gb, 16 inch 3.2k display for $1400. I am tempted but I am a keyboard snob so I want a good typing experience. I should look at them more in the store I guess.

Wow, it was more like a fall day today than middle of August. When Phoebe and I did our morning walk, I wished I'd worn a jacket. Good thing the temperature is cool because we're really dry, need of rain.

Asus are great, I'm an HP guy myself, even a Lenovo will do if I have to, but never another Dell.

Being out in the sticks had some disadvantages. Right now I have ATT internet on good day I get 6mb down and less than 1 up. Verizon just announced 5G home internet is available for me with speeds of up yo 300mb, at a price $10 more than what I'm paying now.

Anyone using Verizon 5G home. Good/bad/ugly?

Connections with VZ FiOS were fine; our issue was their billing; seem to have a lot of hidden fees that customer service couldn’t explain. More than a couple years ago wo moved to T-Mo for cell, Xfinity for cable and internet, and dropped the landlines though we get a line with X if we want it or not. Used it fit fax (MLW needed one) during the Pandemic. Much better when we had the smaller Bell Atlantic / C&P (Chesapeake & Potomac) IMO.

T Mobile also just became available with the 5g unlimited home. same price, not as much speed, but way better than I have.

Att took the federal money to build a fiber optic cable here. They put two termination boxes in my neighborhood. One is 2.2 miles away, one I can see out my bedroom window. They hooked up a few customers to the first box (myself included), but because of the distance my speed sucks. After getting the final payment from the feds, they abandoned the box near ne and the others in the valley. Tax dollars created a useless fiber optic network to nowhere.
