The Coffee House

I went to MLSIL's to pick up Zoe, knowing it would be a challenge as she hates the cariier, the truck, and "outside" in general. The little $#!t hid under a table, behind a couch and under a bed. I'll go back tomorrow. 🙄

Well...I can't believe it.

But I walked into Best Buy this morning and somehow walked out with a MacBook Pro M3 14" with the 18gb of ram, 11 core CPU, 14 core GPU, 512 SSD. I haven't used an apple device in ages besides messing around with them in the store every now and then. This laptop checked every box for me and due to the back to school and Labor Day sale...I was able to score this for $1499. It was $2000.

I am so far enjoying it. I like the size, its fairly light weight. Comfortable to type and I am already getting used to MacOS. But its gonna take time to be familiar with it. The screen is incredible!

After all these years of being anti-apple, I own one now 😅 Although Apple really really wants you to be part of their ecosystem, I am still going to keep using my Google Pixel. I really do like Android but I there are a lot of Macbook owners who don't use any other apple products. I never synced my phone (besides the browser) with my windows PC. I don't need text and phone calls going through onto my PC. Thats what a dang phone is for!

Overall, the experience has been pretty positive. I'll have to make some changes here and there, but change is good and that's exactly what I was looking for.

Busy week for us, bedroom remodel is done, walls/ceiling/woodwork painted, new carpet down, and everything moved back in. Two doctor appointments worked in. Last batch of Fig wine bottled, labeled, and put away. Renewed our vehicle tags and paid bills. Picked up the new RV and have it tucked away in the port. Packed up and headed for the Lake for a a family cookout this weekend. Next week we load/equip the RV for two road trips in September, start a new batch of fig wine, and start the prep on our master remodel. Throw in a few days fall fishing photography, and yard work, I'm booked solid.

I been seriously looking at Macbook Pros. I never been a huge fan of Apple but I can't deny their quality, especially with the Laptops. They have what I'm looking for and they hold their value far longer than Windows laptops. It would also be really exciting to learn an entire new operating system. To be frank, I'm kinda bored of Windows.
Love my MacBook Pro and how easy it is to synch with the iPhone and iPad.

My last 3 day weekend before every day becomes a holiday! 9 days of work left, but who’s counting?

No big plans for the weekend as the weather is not going to be that great here. Going to do some late summer transplanting into the garden and then take the dog for a nice long hike later today with some fellow dog moms.

Tomorrow, I am going to set my art stuff back up now that princess has returned to college for the semester. I hope to do some painting and get back to that. Really looking forward to having time for that when I retire!

I also have many photos that need to be downloaded and edited thus weekend.

Labor Day, we will probably barbecue and have some drinks with friends and family in the afternoon if weather is dry.

I love OS-X but had hardware issues with the MacBook and MacBook Pro I had, a few years ago. I really needed a Windows machine at the time and ended up with a Samsung laptop for $200. MLW finally got me a Dell (work discount) laptop a few years ago when I was an unpaid intern. Recently, we replaced that with another Dell (graphics dying) but with another Dell. I occasionally uiser my own laptop for the GIS work, which requires Windows.

Once I'm at the point of retiring and no longer need Windows for GIS, I'm probably going to get an iMac, and use the Dell laptop for travel until it dies. I have an iPad which will handle most of what I want to do on the road, though I haven't tried LR for iPad, yet, but I still like a larger screen than the iPad for editing.

I also have a Raspberry Pi son #1 gave me for playing. I want to turn it into a weather station, later.

Except I use android 😅

And I'm using Microsoft Edge for browser. Safari was ok but since I don't use an iphone...doesn't make much sense to me.

But its def taking some adjustments. I only have 512gb of storage so I have to figure out what I'm going to do with all my data drives. Even the 1TB model wasen't gonna be enough anyways so I'd have to use external drives regardless. I just don't know if I should do a NAS or just external SSD or something. External SSD is probably my best bet.

I think Apple did well with the new M chips, they have come a long way. I certainly hope this MacBook will last me a long time because that will suck if I start having issues with it. I haven't heard any issues with the model I have, seem to be reliable.

My first one (MacBook standard) issue was the battery and the cost too replace was outrageous. On the second one (Pro) the grraphics and 1/3 of the keyboard quit working. Again, more expensive to fix, than replace. But my budget was nowhere near what was needed for anopther MacBook, so I went back to Windows. Otherwise, I really liked the Pro - aluminum case and Intel processor, so I could run Windows natively (GIS and a couple other things).

I have no experience with the M series chips but I have heard they are fast.

(continued) ...
I do wish the Macs, or at least the iMac Pro, was a "regular box" with seprate boards for main processing, network/modem, sound, and graphics. It makes it easier to update or repair. On the other hand, I don't want to have to deal with base menory locations and IRQs.

Hey @Digger... Since you gave the fried cheese another go... I was at the store and saw this and decided it was time for me to also give it another go (I know it's not Vegemite but if I ever see it in a store, I will get it so I can compare.)

It is definitely still an acquired taste, but it wasn't so bad. Not as poisonous as I remember 😅 I had it on buttered toast.
