It's *almost* fun to turn a house into a little showpiece, while knowing you won't be there long enough to really enjoy it. Do you really think a basement remodel is necessary? Totally agree on basics like electrical work, plaster and painting. Spruced up landscaping gives a place curb appeal.
I'd be tempted to find a real estate agent and have them do a walk through and get advice. It's basically free advice from someone with an eye for what you need to get a fair price while keeping some money back for your final home. If that makes sense. In our case we were having to sell in a buyer's market so we could move to Texas fairly quickly for family reasons. That meant doing a lot of extra $tuff we wished we could have passed on, but our realtor was grimly firm.

We did sell it quickly, so she was correct, but it wasn't cheap.
