What's new

The Coffee House

Did some upgrading and down sizing of my home network. It's not perfect and honestly it's temporary. Going to install a rack mount and add in a UPS. But I ran some cat 6 to the garage and installed a Unifi Swiss Army Knife Ultra and upgraded the AP in the house to have Wifi 7. All POE. It made everything better, the new unifi switch has much better performance too.

My End of Sept 2025 Time-Lapses

I don't think I mentioned this pair before. I made a couple of time-lapses essentially back to back at the end of September. The daylight clip was an effort to find a good frame rate for clouds. For overnight (for stars and space), using my 50mm lens, I've found that 1 fps generally works well, but for daylight (for cloud patterns) I need to slow the cloud movement down. I think this one at 4 fps seems OK. I might try 8 fps someday. Ironically, I think I'd prefer 6 fps, but there is no such setting on my a6400.

"250927 [FHD] Sept Sony a6400 Tokina 16.5-135mm F3.5-5.6 Time-Lapse",
""
[ 4 fps, length 4:24, morning starting 8:10:50 about 20% clouds?, EV+2, lens set ~24mm]

"250929 [FHD] End of Sept Time-Lapse Sony a6400 Canon 50mm",

[1 fps, length 4:40, evening, starting 20:55:31 exposure 1/30 sec., EV+2]

I have not said this before, but as far as my astro time lapses (the constellations and stars clips) I don't mind if someone downloads them and tries to modify them. In particular, if someone has a set of their own time-lapses of the same nights, If they find a way to edit them together, I would not mind them making the results available. The main thing I object to is re-posting my videos if one has not "added" something significant.

Daylight Savings Brain Fog

If I understand this correctly, some US States, Canadian Provinces and other places don't make the change to and from Daylight Savings. Toronto still does this, and I'm brain-fogged tonight. Then again, that's not really that unusual. :-)

Correct, some US States and territories do not: Arizona (except for the Navajo Nation, which observes daylight saving time), Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands.

Personally, I'd rather stay with standard time and not switch. I also think that Maine should switch to the Atlantic Time Zone.

I absolutely hate daylight savings time, because the cats and dogs don't track time, and breakfast time is breakfast time for them, and they will let you know about it. Seriously, there is absolutely no need for time changes in this day and age. I'll stop here before I get political... 😁

In other news, a few weeks ago I got to meet one of our new neighbors across the back alley when she backed into my privacy fence. Spent yesterday afternoon replacing the damaged cedar boards. Next weekend I'll stain it to match the older fence pickets as much as is possible.

I started my first job today, well first regular job with benefits. I've always self employed but it wasn't enough. Its really stressful with this change in routine, I'm having a hard time with it. Juggling other responsibilities and now a regular job.

My routine has changed for like 20 years so it's going to extremely hard adjusting to and so many new things to learn.

I don't know how to process this stuff. Waking up early is going to be challenging. I have a hard time with changes. But it will be nice having benefits and a regular paycheck.

It's just a lot of pressure. Any advice would nice if you have it.

You will get used to it; it just might take some time.

I spent a number of years on rotating shifts. The hardest changeover for me was going from midnights (off at 06:30 AM) to daywork (start at 06:00 AM), but I got through it. More recently, I was used to getting up no later than six. Even after retiring, I was up at six to feed Zoe. MLSIL is not an early riser, so when I spent a few weeks at her place with no cat, I quickly started staying up later, watching TV mysteries with her, and sleeping in until 8:00 or so. Once you get into the routine, you'll be fine.

After 20 years of regemented life in the military, I had to adjust to civilian life when I retired. It worked out fine, but it was kinda tough at first. It just takes creating a new set of habits, which take a couple of weeks to set in, but it is doable.

Sure! Like @snowbear said: you will get used to it. ;) Give yourself time to adjust and settle in.

When the pressure starts to get to you, ask yourself if getting that regular paycheck, plus benefits, outweighs the challenges of learning new things and getting up earlier than you're used to. As long as the answer is Yes, then it's just a matter of time. This stuff won't always be new.

I have a hard time with changes.
I do, too. I don’t like the disruption to the space-time continuum; aka my schedule. Our inner clocks and fight-or-flight instincts kick in.

Once you have done this several times it won't feel as strange and, eventually, should become your new normal.

Congrats on the new job! :icon_sunny:
