My dear friend Britt and her Mom got me semi-observing the old Norwegian(and an even older Norse)custom of observing the Winter Solstice on Dec 21 and the 12 following days as celebration
of the sun's return--and Christmas. Legitimizes feasting, over-refreshment, socializing and general merriment. Pine boughs everywhere, especially around doorways. This pagan roots stuff can be fun!

I've always like to have one non-tradtional dish when we put out our own spread. Usually I went Cajun, like shrimp jambalaya but this year (Friday) I'm going with a lobster pot pie. Now that we are in New England, it just seems right.

MLW and MLSIL started their drive up, this afternoon. MLSIL wanted to wait until the mail was delivered; her passport was scheduled to arrive. I should have mine in six to eight weeks. When spring hits, I'm going to take a ride up to Nova Scotia. MLSIL is a big fan of the TV show "The Curse of Oak Island" so I told he we can go there. We can swing into Halifax for a few sites and Lunenburg to see the Blue Nose II again. I can see myself going to the Atlantic provinces many times.

That's an area I've gotten interested in, too. Glad you have an agenda mapped out - we'll expect pictures and details when you go!

I've only been around there once in my life. I remember a picture of a pot of boiled lobsters. The bright orange on a wood table.

In Maryland, it's a bushel basket of steamed blue crabs with corn on the cob and a pitcher of beer. The table is covered with newspapers. "From the land of pleasant living."

MLW and MLSIL rolled into the hotel in Mystic, CT around midnight; a lot of early holiday travelers. I need to go back to Grant's and get another pumpkin roll or two so they can have some. I'll shop Friday morning so it's all fresh.

46F/8C and cloudy with a morning mist or fog. I'm going to mount the polar bear in the truck and drive it down to the park and back. The bear is made of wire mesh and the arms are zip-tied on, so intended as a static dispkay. I think he will be fine at slow parade speed. Maybe I should swing by the box store and see what else tgeynhave in stick. I can never have too many bears and MLW can never have too many Christmas decorations!

Outdoor deco minimal. Inside? That's another matter entirely starting next week. LED candles, 2km of batt-operated teensy string lights along baseboards+stairways, lit swags over interior doorway arches, kitchen cupboards with more string lights. BIG Costco AA battery buy ahead. Pagan cedar boughs over entry doors for visiting Norse Jul spirits.
Weather over the next 48 just edged into awful+. High winds, cratering temps and steady wide-band snow squalls off Lake Huron and/or Lake Ontario, wind direction-dependent. Environment Canada often issues panicky "storm of the century" forecasts meant to wake up our inner-prepper selves but this one might just happen.

Happy Thanksgiving to the American hosers. Did a bunch of cooking, including an absolutely cracking apple pie, and had dinner with Buzz and his family. Now I am home with tea and kitties. I had overcooked my first batch of veggies, so now they are lightly pureed and cooking in the Dutch oven with some beans and sweet potatoes and Moroccan spices for a nice spicy stew. I'll be cleaning for another hour or so

Same here. We bought our place 3+ years ago and our home inspector warned us then our HVAC systems were nearing the end. Every inspection has been fine, but it feels like a setup for a breakdown just ahead of subzero temps.
