The prodigal mod returns.

It's been a craptactular semester for reasons that will remain unsaid here lest I need to moderate my own posts, and it's not like the craptacularness is easing up, but I need to keep whatever scraps of sanity I have left, so I am back to remind myself that there's more to me than...well, than the rest of me that has to deal with the unnamed crap.

Well 4 days and they finally fixed my truck. Almost 2k thank goodness for extended warranty with its $200 deductible.

Happy Friday Hosers! I’m off to art class today then dinner with friends tonight. Busy weekend on the horizon. Local garden dahlia swap tomorrow morning, hike with friends and dogs in the afternoon then Sunday have to do all of the marketing and errands for hosting Thanksgiving next week. Small crowd of 11 this year as most of the out of towners are coming for Christmas instead. We’ll have the traditional menu of turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and many roasted veggies. Desserts will mostly be pies.

What are your holiday plans?

I went native years back and do Thanksgiving in October now. It isn't freighted with quite the same emotional load, which is kinda welcome when I recall the performative shenanigans of the November version. Gearing up for Christmas now. Shopping all-but-done? Naw, still waiting for
Amazon to dock remaining stuff from far off places. Did get some mahleb thru Amazon for experimental Christmas baking. We're game experimenters who manage to crank out offbeat goodies not found locally. Frankly, the pandemic broke the spell for the big Christmas fête--that and many old conspirators either moving beyond easy travel distances or simply MIA. Smaller and cozier now but still plenty of retox opportunities for all attendees!

Our numbers have shrunk dramatically this year! My niece won't be joining us (she lives upstate) and my brother and his clan are staying home too, so it'll be just the 3 of us. Menus will stay traditional: I ordered a fresh turkey from a local store. Good lord, they've gotten expensive! But I prefer fresh to frozen, and these are from Bell & Evan, always good - trying to get the smallest possible.

I'm making a cherry pie on Wednesday - will probably make the cranberry sauce over the weekend. Yukon gold mashed potatoes, and roasted vegetables will be done on Thanksgiving day.

We'll have my mom take some home with her, and still have lots of leftovers!

Sounds nice. Smaller is better sometimes especially if you're downshifting from the mob scene dinners. FYI, if you've got access there's a hilarious Thanksgiving entertaining survey in the New York Times.

Last year, lazy_lobster did a Friendsgiving and MLW was still working, so in MD. MLSIL and I went down to the Portland waterfront for a nice buffet. Rained on the way down, turned over to mix then all snow on the way back. We went to a restaurant in Freeport with LL another night that weekend.

This year, since both ladies will be up, I think we're cooking something. Not sure if LL will be with us, but there are always leftovers.

Our son and family host Thanksgiving dinner at their house. DW usually makes a couple pies and a side. DIL never fails to set a spread.

MLSIL like to bake pumpkin pies, so we'll have that. I want to make some pumpkin whoopie pies. If we cook a turkey, we'll likely deep fry it, and LL makes a pretty good sweet potato casserole, if they are here. I'll make some stock from turkey bones for later.

I am mobile again. The truck was finished sooner than expected. I went ahead and paid for the rideshare down to get it. I have a passport photo and processing appointment earl;y next week and didn't want to walk down and back. I walked doen for mail and luckily, I was able to get all but a box of LED bulbs in the backpack I took.

And we've shifted gears. It looks like we are heading to the restaurant again this year. It's all good so we can play with turkey and baked goods the rest of the weekend.

I went out for a haircut this morning, and on the way back stopped by a particular bakery in Lewiston. I picked up a pumpkin roll and a few turnovers (apple and blueberry). They gave me a calendar.
