My goal this year is to continue to live off my buyout package as long as possible and try to get a decent subsidy - assuming those don’t go away. Do not get me going on that or I’ll have to venture into the Subscriber’s forums.


Thanks! I could continue through my previous employer’s retiree plan and pay for that but it’s a premium bcbs plan and priced accordingly. It’s almost $2k/month for one person. There are decent options out there through the health care connector for much less - even without a subsidy.


Thanks and happy early birthday to you sir! Agree, I like my birthday except that here in New England it typically snows a lot in February and we almost always end up rescheduling my birthday plans. My brother and his wife travel down from NH so we reschedule whenever roads are bad. This year we got 6” of snow yesterday starting overnight but fortunately it stopped by midday and roads were decent so we had the family over last night for drinks and Chinese food. Played some trivia, had a lot of laughs, ate way too much... One of my sisters-in-law made a yummy tuxedo cake. Perfect evening!

Pats are in the Super Bowl today. Not sure of their chances but it’s always exciting to have the home team make it to the championship game. Undecided if going to a party at my friend’s bar or watching from home. It’s arctic out there today- wind chills well below 0 by game time. Staying home and enjoying my nice warm house seems likely. I got my share of the outdoors yesterday clearing the driveway.

I just learned something about Military Retiree healthcare that nobody warned me about. Because I am still working and have great coverage from work, I elected to delay my Medicare Part B enrollment. TRICARE comes back and says, since you don't have BOTH part A and part B, we are disenrolling you until you get both of those. I won't grump too much, because I use it as my secondary insurance, and it acts like gap insurance, but it sucks that they assume if one is 65 that they are retired. They will continue to cover my wife for the next two years, but not me, until I get all my Medicare set up, which is one reason why I won't cancel my insurance from work. In two years, we will have to make the decision. But, in the end, I'm fortunate to have insurance where so many people don't due to costs. I won't go any further down that road...

I haven't been outside, yet, but looking at what is on top of the truck, I'd say we got 2" or 3" (5 to 7.6 cm) of snow. It's still falling but very lightly.

Feel sorry for you snowbirds, I'm not a big winter fan. Up until four years ago we would leave just after Christmas we'd spend a couple months in S. FL. Miss those days!

But the "snowbirds" are those that head south for the winter.
It doesn't really bother me. If I have to go out, I dress approriately. I couldn't tolerate the heat and humidity of S FL; DC was bad enough. I'm not nomadic, so I like to stay in one place (but will visit around). The thing I have to get used to is all the places that are closed from November through April.

I actually enjoy the snow even though I complain about having to clear the driveway and walkways. I take the dog hiking to our local spots and we enjoy the peace and quiet that the snow blankets everything in.

I have all I need to stay warm and deal with the snow - boots, a good hat, fleece lined pants, a very warm parka, trekking poles, snow shoes and hand warmers in my gloves. Yesterday was a balmy 30° on our walk and I had to ditch the scarf and hat halfway through…
