time lapse traffic - hints?

I was at a friends house, and he had a fence by the road. On a whim, I took a couple long exposure shots of traffic going by, and they ended up OK. The framing and such isn't superb by any means, I was really just trying to test various combinations of settings to get the ideal lines. Does anyone have any good suggestions on how to really get these kinds of shots to work well?
oh, and I know that this isn't truly "time lapse" and is really just long exposure. my bad.

I think you mean long exposure. Time lapse is where you take a bunch of photos timed equally. It's played back at movie speeds.

The best effect is in heavy traffic with a LONG shutter speed (20+ seconds), and as a part of a more "interesting" shot, like a city at night.
