Tips on buying first DSLR, as well as suggestions?

Anyone have tips on buying a first DSLR? As in what to look for, money, features, and etc. Also any suggestions? I really like the Canons and Nikons so a suggestion with one of those brands would be extra helpful, thanks.

Any cheaper models? I could afford one of the two after saving up for a while, but I was wondering if I could get cheaper, because I need to find a mic (any help with that would be great), and I also need some lights for recording.

i dont know much about external mic's on DSLR's. you would have to look up different models and see if they have the plugs for an external mic. then see if any of them are in your price range.

Okay two last questions, is there a time to buy a camera (other than sales), or should you buy when you feel like you want one?

I prefer when I can find a camera or lens used but in excellent condition. especially when its a situation where someone buys it, uses it once or twice, and decides they dont want it. if you know what to look for, and how to look it over, you can get some great deals on used gear. be mindful however, that you often lose out on getting a warranty with it, and it is usually "buyer beware". sometimes the manufacturer or store will offer deals or rebates that make buying something new as cheap as they are going for used.

Consider something like a Canon 550D.

hello! I have been doing some research lately and If you are more into the video recording I would recommend either the Canon 600D or the 1100D(cheapest of the DSLR canons) If you are looking to do more into the photography and less video I would suggest Nikon D3200 or D5100 but yes, do some research on them individually and see what features they have that you are looking for.

LOL you're just tired of writing the same damn thing over and over again in these threads

Just write the response once, and every time you see this kind of thread, copy and paste. Oh, once in a while you'll need to replace camera names like "D3100" with "D3200" when new ones come out, but that's an easy change right?


If video recording plays a big part in your buying decision I'd recommend Canon's 650D. Currently it's the only DSLR capable of AF in video. You'd need to get an STM lens too. 40mm pancake is cheap.
