Trade in or part out? Need opinions, please!

I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT, 8 mp. Since used value is not so great, does it make sense to buy a better body and use my Canon 18-55 EF-S lens that is still in excellent condition? I also have a Canon EF 75-300 lens I would like to use on the new body. Does this sound feasible, or will these lenses not be compatible? Will the mount be the same for a Nikon, or do I have to stick to Canon? Any help would be appreciated...

EF and EF-S mounts are for canon only.EF-s mounts will only work on a crop factor canon such as your xt. EF mounts will work on crop and full frame canon models. To use these on another make of camera you need an adapter and will likely lose autofocus and aperture control. If you upgrade your Canon to another Canon you will be ok taking into account crop or full frame lens restrictions. In your case I would recommend if you think you need a better camera to buy a canon body as you said, but keep my older camera as a backup body, it can still take great photos
