I'm looking to get a solid, sturdy tripod, and my budget is about $120 max. I've been using something very, VERY flimsy and I frankly don't trust it.

What do you use, or what would you recommend?

Check out the Slik brand, I have the 700DX Pro and love it... picked up a Manfrotto head for it, great combo.

Had Manfrotto legs before but prefer the Slik myself.

Those legs look great. What head were you using? Any particular reason you prefer Slik over 'Frotto legs?

I really like my induro akb2 with the ballhead.

Chevy/Ford thing perhaps, I just like the build and feel of them better.

I paired mine with the 488 midi ball head, very versatile.

Yeah, that looks solid. Glowing reviews too. It might be a while until I can justify the price for the two together though.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone, I'll keep my eye out. Anything anyone wants to share in the price range of $100-$140 would be great.

I use a Velbon "Sherpa" tripod that I find quite sturdy for a reasonable price and i added a Manfrotto Bogen 327RC2 Magnesium Joystickto it later and love it. Canadian dollars $100 tripod $200 Frotto head.

This has been the best result I've seen so far. Looks like i'll be waiting a little longer to get my hands on a good ball head.

I really like this tripod. The factory ball head is adequate, I got by with it for about a year prior to buying the Manfrotto head. That being said I bought the heavy duty Magnesium head the 324RC2 Joystick Head is considerably cheaper, it's on ebay for $120.00. Same head smaller version and not made from magnesium.

I cant see you getting much for $120. I recently purchased a Vanguard tripod and head combo for $200 CDN. The tripod is a 263AT and the head is SBH100. Great combo with a very flexible tripod allowing any conceivable shooting position. The legs spread out to 3 different angles for really low shooting and the center post flips out and you can pick the angle you want. Its probably the last one I will be buying.

Bynx, For the record, I was talking about the Manfrotto 324RC2 Joystick Head for $120. The sturdy Velbon tripod I have been using for the last two years is $99 on sale in Vancouver. That being said, when I could afford it I put the Manfrotto 327RC2 Joystick heavy duty Magnesium head (supports 5.5Kg.) on the Velbon Tripod. This combination is very stable and strong enough to easily support my 50D with just about any imaginable lens on it. The largest I have used so far is the 400 f5.6L and it was like a rock, for added stability I hang my gearbag underneath (without the Body and one lens, it weighs just under 5Kgs.)

The only reason I might consider changing from this combination, would be to get Carbon Fiber legs for it, for the weight factor alone, as I take this setup with me when i travel. However, it is going to have to cost me a lot in baggage fees before I do this as I am not a huge fan of carbon fiber. From years of Yacht racing I can tell you that carbon Fiber has two drawbacks, vibration transference and while it is strong it is also brittle if it is struck by anything against the bias. I have seen my luggage after some trips and wondered if a Carbon fiber tripod would survive that abuse.

On one particular boat I raced on we carried 6 carbon fiber Spinnaker poles. When they broke the got chucked overboard (Ouch, big$$$$ and Huge Carbon Fiber Footprint. Yes pun intended.) Anyway when money is not a concern the weight advantage over an Aluminum pole was huge. Me like so many though, work and live Paycheck to Paycheck and I can't afford to chuck stuff away. My apologies I digress.

I saw your post in the other recent tripod thread, good recommendation.

Talk about transgressing. MrEdinarea51 it was not the $120 you mentioned. I was referring to the budget of Novux who is the OP in this case.

OK Bynx, I see that and offer you an appology for that assumption on my part, but the $100 dollar Velbon Sherpa Tripod just can't be beat for the Sturdiness when your on a tight budget. Check it out and as with any tripod the head can be changed at any time for any head.
