Im looking to expand and start learning more about lighting. Im considering an inexpensive umbrella lighting system
Can anyone provide any recommendations? Budget is under $100.

It will be used with the Canon Xs

You're going to be hard pressed for that price. Here's a kit break down with some of the cheapest parts from B&H.

Light stand - $20
Umbrella adapter with cold shoe - $15
43" shoot through umbrella - $20

That's just for an umbrella, stand, and bracket. $55. That leaves you $45 to purchase a flash and a way to trigger it. Bump your budget to about $175.

Vivitar 285HV's - $90ish
Cactus triggers - $30

If you go used, you can find cheaper, but you may have to purchase additional components to trigger. I saw a used 540EZ for $60, but you'd need a $15 hot shoe adapter for the flash to use triggers with it.

B&H does offer kits for like $200+. Also Alien Bee's starts around $200+ as well.....
