No question the D70 is a nice camera, even without the S.
My suggestion on the ISO thing is take several shots, different scenes, different directions, and see if the banding is consistently in the same place. If it is, might be a sensor issue. If it's there but in different places, it might be a processing issue (in camera). If it is not there, might be the sensor or processing responding to certain levels of a light in an oddway.
Mind you, this is all speculation. I'm not a camera fixer dude.
