Want to get started, on a budget

Hi,

I want to start taking photography more seriously, so I am asking for some advice on which camera to get. I'm really interested in HDR photography, and don't want to spend more that €600. So far my choice lies with the G12. What do you think?

Edit: also, what do you think of the new "mirrorless" cameras. Would the Sony NEX be a good choice?

Both the G12 and Sony NEX series are reported as being very good, albeit different cameras. The G12 is a high-end point & shoot with full manual control and RAW capability, BUT it does not have interchangeable lenses. The NEX series give you interchangeable lenses, but add a fair bit to the the price. If you can afford the NEX, it would be my choice of the two.

The Sony A33 has auto HDR as well as auto bracketing with the highest dynamic range in this price range.

Amazon.com: Sony Alpha SLTA33 DSLR with Translucent Mirror Technology and 3D Sweep Panorama (Camera Body only) (Black): Camera & Photot also has a ton of other useful features not found in this price range. This is the body only though, so it doesn't come with a lens.

Nikon D5100, i have been hearing a lot of good stuff about this camera. Perfect for beginners and entry level photographers. I actually gave advice to my brother on getting it. Its either this or the Canon 600D. Theres a comparison video for these two on youtube by digitalrevcom. i highly recommend checking it out.

Yeah the d5100 can do a lot. I have one and a few G series higher end lens, the d5100 takes fantastic pictures for the entry level body price. And does hd video at 30 fps. Even when i upgrade to a better camera i sure am keeping the d5100 for backup and video and a lightweight camera

If your main interest is HDR, I would say save yourself a few Euros, buy a cheap (like 50E) camera and do fake HDR. It will most probably be just fine.
