Perhaps it's likes in threads that are in hidden or deleted threads. Since the lower number is the quantity of a list of links (can't link to hidden or deleted).
The other number is the total including the hidden or deleted.

That sounds like the most likely answer. And it would explain why the value vary from person to person (I'm only 1 like out between the two lists).

"Likes" are fairly new - there shouldn't be any likes in hidden threads (for me anyway - since I can't post in hidden threads, if there are any). Deleted threads, maybe.

I bet that's it - the missing likes were probably in deleted threads.

Oh there are hidden things - actually I wonder if when we move things to sections you can't see if likes on those posts remain visible in the list of displayed likes. If not it might explain the difference - esp if you lost access to a section you used before (eg subscribers section).

Otherwise deleted threads and the odd gremlin might have mucked things up.

But in the end its really not that big a number in difference, barring Bitter's, but he has enough of those things anyway

Where is that quote from?

I remember an announcement a while back (by either dascrow or 4Nines - I can't remember which now) where they mentioned that policy had been reversed, and that all posts counted towards the total now.
As of the writing of this, I have 11,775 posts - I expect it to go up by 1 when I hit the submit button (this thread is in the Off-Topic section). [edit - it did.]

Either way, that shouldn't affect "Likes"...

Actually, since I have 272 likes listed under my profile, but only 268 at the top of the listing of likes, I think Savannahterr88 tweeted my other likes and now they've disappeared into the internets.

Something must have happened, because I only see 254 listed under your avatar.

Are you maybe looking at Likes given instead of Likes received? (I didn't even think to check if that was off too.)

Well, THAT'S embarrassing!:blushing: I sure did enjoy that nice big glass of wine I had before posting my comment, though.
Reminds me of the time my sister sent resumes out, and listed "attention to detail" as one of her strengths, then forgot to put her address on the resume!

ANYWAY...that's good. I actually only have ONE less "likes received", but 4 less in the likes given totals.

But more importantly...I'm clearly "liking" people more than they "like" me. I need to be more cynical. Many of my real-life friends don't see how that's possible.

Snowbear, click ON the "Likes received" line under your avatar on your profile page; that'll take you to a listing of all the comments that have been liked, and at the top of that, you'll see another 'total' number.

I saw this morning that I was close, but then I very nearly blew right by it!! Not to worry though, that glass of wine didn't keep me from starting my own thread just for my 1,000 post.
