The place to start is with Light: Science and Magic: An Introduction to Photographic Lighting

From there it depends what you need to light - portraits, products, studio, location?

The Light:Science and Magic book has 2 parts. The first 1/2 is a technical explaination, the second 1/2 discusses lighting studio portraiture.
