What's new

What are you watching on TV right now?

Is it as good as The Last Kingdom?
Better, I thought. Historically informed and especially adept at using that society's class tensions to set the story. Strongly character-driven. Dramatic. Great action. And don't mess with a shield maiden!

Watched "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" last night, it was cheesy & brilliant🤪.

"The Alienist"on Netflix but leaving soon on the Canadian service. Somehow totally missed the 1st season of this wildly entertaining, moody, atmospheric crime-fiction thriller set in 1890s New York City. Emerging detective, forensic and psychological talent stalk a serial killer shielded by well-placed defenders. Gorgeous Gilded Age/Belle Époque sets and interiors shot in Budapest.

Nearly anything detached from current politics...

Rerunning the excellent police procedural, "Bosch" and "Bosch: Legacy." Total sleeper series that flew under the critical radar. Great writing, solid acting, nicely off-beat. L.A. noir with a touch of James Ellroy.
If the film "L.A. Confidential" grabbed you, this will, too.

Loved the Bosch series and enjoyed Legacy as well. Having read all the Michael Connelly books way back when, I was hesitant to watch the series when I saw who they chose for Bosch because he didn’t fit my vision of the character but he was fantastic in the role. Totally nailed it!

Fun fact - in the books, Harry Bosch is half brother to the much younger Mickey Haller from the Lincoln Lawyer series (also by Connelly).

Adored Lincoln Lawyer--books and series.

Recently given Akira Kurosawa's 1949 noir classic "Stray Dog." Wow! Far cry from the latter "slice&dice" epics. Tokyo cop's gun gets lifted on transit and is later involved in serious crimes. Finding it is a very young Toshiro Mifune's obsession. Might be streaming somewhere, maybe Criterion? Kurosawa reportedly shot street scenes in Tokyo's black market with a camera concealed in a suitcase. Worth a look.

Dying to get a look at "Slough Horses." Loved Mick Herron's "Slough House" books.

WOW!!!! That last episode of Six Feet Under was brilliant, satisfying and perfect. What a great show.

Streaming Blue Bloods with MLW.

Bad-a$$ Steve McQueen in "Bullitt." Epic car chase pre-CGI along with "The French Connection."

Watching Dark Matter on Apple TV. I love mind twisty sci fi stuff. So far I like it. Not sure the story will hold for very long. things like this (time travel, multi verse, parallel worlds), tend to get too complicated to sustain any type of cohesive storyline. Once I get lost in the plot, I’m out!

I'm watching the Weather Channel as they track Hurricane Helene which is 140 miles to the east of me, but for a good while could have come in my back door. Sorry for Perry, FL but glad for Panama City. Whew!

Update...the hurricane came ashore at 10pm CST and is moving north and a bit east. No issues on my side of the storm.

Twin Peaks anyone? I've tried watching it 2 years ago but saw only S1 and there are two more ahead plus the movie(s?). I love the aesthetic and the way the story develops, so I'll be trying to give it a second chance.
