What first DSLR should I get?

hmmm I wouldn't be so sure about that. We have lots of people here shooting Canon as well. I was just kidding before haha... A close friend owns a Canon 7D and I just love that camera. But again, here you're comparing 2 models which are not meant to be competitors. I think that's the reason why most people is recommending the D7000.

It all depends on your budget of course, but I think the kit lens is fine to start. I decided to get the 28-300 and it proved to be a great choice. However, I've read mixed opinions about it.
As for the prime, you can get the 35mm or 50mm f/1.8G (which I heard is better than the f/1.4G I own and payed double ¬¬)... But again it depends on your personal preferences...

Thanks so much man, so I will just go with the kit lens to try it out, and if I like it, Ill keep it and get the 35mm 1.8

I'm a Nikon guy. My first cam was a canon, but after buying the D40 when I first started, I have been glued to Nikon ever since. The link above will show and explain every reason to choose the D7000 over the 60D

so I got the d7000, I am not too impressed, I like the 60D more. I will keep using this, though, and see if it changes my mind.

I would recommend getting a cheaper body to start off and get some decent glass (you could probably get a decent entry body and 2 good lenses with your budget). The value of bodies depreciate very quickly and you can save a bundle by not buying the latest.

Having said that if you are bent on those two, you pretty much have to decide between canon and nikon because all your money is going to be invested in one of those systems. Between those two cameras the D7000 certainly has an edge but also costs a few hundred dollars more. But if you go with one of these, you're going to be getting the body and maybe one good lens.

I chose canon and haven't looked back yet.

I will most likely end up with the canon 60d again, but I will continue to use the d7000 for a while before I return it just to make sure. I just loved the feel and screen of it. I will probably pick up a better lens instead of the kit ones too.

It's always just a matter of what's more comfortable for you. But, as a simple exercise, would you mind explaining what is it you don't like about the D7000 so much?

it's not so comfy, the buttons aren't placed where I like em...

But its really quiet...that's one plus. Also I dont like the screen, I really have to squint to see any details in it.
