What kit do you take on holiday??

Hi All,

Its holiday time again - Thailand this year for me and the wife. I really am not restricted on weight or volume, but what is a realistic set to take. So far, I am thinking 7d body (obviously!), 10-22 or 16-35 for landscapes and sunsets, 24-105 for walk around use, 50mm 1.2 for night photography and maybe my 70-200 if we visit crocodile farms etc and 1.4 tele just in case there are wildlife opportunities (2x TC is heavier and does not autofocus). I was going to put in a couple of filters (polarising, ND, Grad ND) and maybe a flash unit. Wife tends to stay on the beach a lot of the time and I go off looking for photos so I want to be covered for most eventualities.

Am I taking too much? is there something obvious missing? Yes, its insured for all risks and the hotels are secure when I leave some kit in the room during the day.

Taking a big lens (70-200) for the small chance of wildlife would not be my choice altho I probably do more in-country moving around than you might.
I go with 3 lenses 24-70, 50 and 70-300 and use the 24-70 for 90% of the shots.
I would take sensor cleaning stuff.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately I don't have a lighter long lens :-( so its the 70-200 or nothing (no way I am taking my 100-400! ). We do move around a bit, but its flights so again not too worried by weight.

If you have not been before, Thailand is certainly a photographer's paradise (although I like Myanmar more) but you really need to be aware of the very sophisticated scams pulled on travelers.

Most of them involve multiple people who gradually lead you to a jewelry store where you will get rooked out of $.

Most of all, when/if you visit the Grand Palace or Reclining Buddha temple, do not believe any stories you hear from people on the street about them being closed.
Get the official hours on line and stick with them.
Never, ever, ever get in a tuk-tuk for a low cost tour at teh behest of someone on the street. Never, ever.
You will need long pants and your wife covered shoulders for either of those places but they rent suitable attire cheaply just inside the gate.

I usually just take my Leica M6 with 50mm and 28mm, a bunch of film and my X100 for the instant gratification.

These days I usually go with a 5D II, 17-40L, 24-105L, 300 f/4 L, often a tripod, a nodal adapter for panoramas, screw in polariser, a Lee filter adapter and some Lee gradient filters. Adds up to roughly 7 kg

Sometimes I will take all this on longer backpacking trips.

Oh, this August I will add a 4x5 field camera + sheet holders for my vacation travels.

Its our 7th visit to Thailand but my first since I got seriously into photography so, yes I know of the scams etc. Earlier this year I was in Cairo which is Scam central!!

I know Cairo myself, but what is scam there?

Just don't trust the street vendors which are hunting for prey, that is all ... but it is like that almost everywhere on the planet
